Butt Plugs - From Health Device to Sex Device

Man is just about the most imaginative creature on the planet by assigning uses to things that were otherwise invented for other uses. Butt plugs were originally designed for therapeutic uses like dilating the rectum. (One of the first ads announced it as Dr. Young’s Ideal Rectal dilators).

It was not long after when the pleasurable (to some) side effects of the rectal dilator became its main selling point. The advertising and the toy’s marketing disappeared from the general public’s attention.
It surfaced in other places with an altogether different usage, becoming a mainstay as a tool used in sexual play.

Design

As a sex tool, the plug is designed to penetrate the rectum or butt for the enhanced sexual pleasure when the rectum is stimulated during the sex act. After some time of experimentation and actual use, the plugs were designed with flanges (the flared end so the device will not be sucked into the inside of the rectum.)

Unlike the vagina with the cervix, the rectum is a straight path to the sigmoid colon and objects that are inserted have the tendency to travel up into the owner’s bowels. Today’s plugs have flared ends to prevent such a disaster. (An operation will be needed to extract it from your insides.)

Round end

These days, the design usually is rounded (or conical) at one end where it is used to insert itself into the body. The plug narrows itself into some kind of a “waist”. This is where it locates itself to the anal sphincter. (The sphincter muscle prevents it from slipping outside the body.)

The flared end (flange) is located outside the body and it prevents the whole butt plug being sucked into the body.

Short and smooth

The lower part of the rectum is easily perforated (poked into with holes). This is why the plugs have to be shorter than dildos and has a more pronounced circumference rather than the length. They need to be short and smooth to avoid damaging the rectum or the bowel.

To add smoothness to any of the activities that will use the plugs, large amounts of lubricants are needed. This is especially so when the movement of the insertion or removal have to be slow and as unobtrusive as possible.

Hygiene

When used, these plugs are sometimes covered with condoms. The reason is for hygienic purposes and for speedy disposal of the condom which may come in contact with fecal matter.

Like other sexual toys, plugs may not be shared by multiple users. This may facilitate transfer of body fluids from one person to another, which is a fatal formula for the transfer of HIV virus that causes AIDS.

Fetishes

Plugs for use in butts come in many colors, shapes and textures although the sizes tend to be small. Some are designed to look like penises (to help users fantasize about it) and some are ribbed.

These butt plugs are also made up of many different materials (silicone, wood, metal, glass, stone, etc) all geared to the fantasies of the users.
